As a teaching assistant at Michigan State University in Professor Ben Van Dyke’s “Design and Social Activism” course, we assigned reading and writing assignments on the relationship between digital technology, politics, and design. Each week, we facilitated discussions about these reading assignments to help students situate the work of artists and designers in a history of social activism. In student led critique and in one-on-one consultation, I provided guidance to students who were instructed to design posters, web-sites, and a final book project related to existing social issues or movements. In conversations, I helped students address the relationship between form and concept developing in their work, and encouraged them to pay attention to craft and documentation while working with analog and digital processes.
